Holy Matrimony is Christian marriage, in which a man and a woman enter into a life-long union, make their vows before God and the Church, and receive the grace and blessing of God to help them fulfill their vows. The union of husband and wife in heart, body, and mind is intended by God for their mutual joy; for the help and comfort given one another in prosperity and adversity; and when it is God's will, for the procreation of children and their nurture in the knowledge and love of the Lord. Therefore marriage is not to be entered into unadvisedly or lightly, but reverently, deliberately, and in accordance with the purposes for which is was instituted by God.
In order to be married at St. James on the Lake, either the bride or groom must be an active baptized member. If your membership is elsewhere, and you are active in your home church, you can be married at this church if your priest will write to our priest requesting this arrangement and a rationale for doing so. The following conditions are standard, whether one is a current member or not: (1) You must attend services here regularly for six months. (2) You must make an appointment with the Rector, request to be married here, and complete the course of premarital counseling before ever scheduling a wedding. This helps the couple and the priest to be assured that they are indeed prepared to make this monumental decision to choose a lifelong commitment to one another.
The wedding and the marriage are two very different things. Wedding plans are only made after the marriage instruction has been completed. The priest may choose to refuse to marry a couple if compelling reasons arise during the pre-marital counseling that suggest severe impediments to a potential marriage or that this relationship may not be suitable for making a Christian marriage.
If you've been previously married and divorced it's necessary to request the Bishop’s consent for your marriage to take place in the Church. Application may be made through the priest for this privilege. After thoroughly discussing the failure of the previous relationship, and being assured that the same mistakes will not likely be repeated, the priest will offer his recommendation to the Bishop. No plans may be made at the church nor is it wise to incur personal expense until the Bishop’s permission has been received; it is not automatically given.
